Third Place a winner in an energy crisis?

I was quite surprised to see that research has shown that over a third of remote work is actually being done from somewhere other than the home – as sociologists would term a “third place”. I’ll be even more surprised if that doesn’t increase now that the home office just got a whole lot more expensive to heat and light as the domestic energy price hikes start to bite. Until now, the appeal of third places as working locations has centred around things like facilities (e.g. fast reliable wifi) or the desire for human interaction. But could the increased cost of being at home all day add a new impetus?

This article from The Hill nicely captures the potential benefits of third space working for employees, employers and society at large.

The now-common term “work from home” belies an important phenomenon in today’s economy: many people, when given the option to work remotely, are actually working from somewhere else
