Topic: How is automation and AI impacting your TA function?
Our first Innovation Board of 2025 took place in-person and was held before the JBC annual conference ‘Irresistible’. All discussions strictly adhere to Chatham House Rules but a useful high level overview of the key points discussed during the Innovation Board meeting are noted below:
- Automation: Global TA leaders are telling us that they are being asked to reduce their teams by as much as 50% in the next 12 months by implementing digital solutions. We discussed with the board if this is something that they were experiencing and if they believe automation will impact their TA function.
- Many of the Board Members explained that they are experiencing some element of pressure to introduce automation and to reduce fixed costs but also to enhance experience and ensure they embed a competitive advantage.
- Some members spoke about the amount of constant change and the need for agility and that AI just highlights this further, whether it is through change in leadership, pressure from the external market or advances in tech. All spoke about the challenge of balancing change and the appetite for risk within their organization some quoting up to 12 months to get technology changes through their internal governance.
- All acknowledged the challenge of striking a balance of delivering BAU whilst ensuring that they are future proofing their delivery models.
- Data & Insights: The role of data is paramount! Data is suggesting that as much as 80% of TA can be automated, and the Board’s experience is that typically this discussion is taking place without CHRO or TA professionals being present. Defining the support we need to ensure we are involved in these discussions is critical.
- The Board reported that there is a wide variance in different organizations’ experience of this and many are under pressure to make change happen at speed and at scale but lack the support to do so including driving ROI using their existing tech.
- Some organizations are further advanced and have a roadmap or plan but others are struggling to gain traction due to infrastructure challenges.
- There was acknowledgement that in some cases, HR will retain the seat at the board table which they gained during covid while organizations work out the impact of automation. To what extent TA is included in those discussions is still unclear.
- AI: The Board discussed what the biggest barriers to using AI are in their TA process today and what their plans were to overcome them. Key areas of note included:
- One area that was highlighted was the increase in “robo candidates” or AI-generated candidates. This is putting extreme pressure on TA organizations who are experiencing up to a trifold increase in applications. This has many implications including the use of screening, the company’s stance on applicants using AI and educating hiring managers. The Board agreed that this would be a key area of discussion at our next Innovation Board meeting.
