Global Sourcing Training Case Study

About

HILTI Corporation is a multinational company that develops, manufactures, and markets products for construction, building maintenance, energy and manufacturing industries, mainly to the professional end-user. Headquartered in Schaan, Liechtenstein, Hilti employs over 32,000 worldwide.

At a glance

Objective: Enhance HILTI’s Talent Acquisition (TA) function to deliver more strategic and consultative outputs within the organization. Develop a modular curriculum to strengthen both foundational and soft skills in the Sourcing Team.

Approach: Implement a holistic and comprehensive strategy to address HILTI’s immediate training needs in all areas of Advanced Candidate Sourcing & Attraction, Talent Pooling & Candidate Engagement. Provide tools and resources to support the ongoing development of new and existing team members.

Engagement: Establish an engaging, immersive talent training program to upskill a global team of 20 Sourcers, who had recently moved into new roles, through a range of live virtual trainings, and follow-up ‘drop-in’ problem-solving sessions to enable knowledge transfer and practical application.

The opportunity

AMS Strategy Consulting collaborated with HILTI to globally train and upskill their newly transformed Talent Acquisition (TA) business function using a blend of pre-existing, best practice content and customized adaptations to reflect HILTI’s specific requirements and context. By partnering with AMS, HILTI sought to solve a critical skills gap within their Sourcing function, which was expected to deliver a more strategic and consultative approach to the business and an improved ability to uncover niche, passive talent.

The solution

By training both foundational ‘technical sourcing’ and ‘consultative soft skills’, practitioners gained well-rounded skills to drive direct sourcing whilst improving the Hiring Manager and Candidate experience.
Over the course of 4 ½ days of training, delivered in 12 sessions across 4 weeks, the team covered skills including:

  • Sourcing mandate and effective partnering with Recruiters & Hiring Managers
  • Building a targeted channel’s-to-market strategy
  • Advanced Boolean operators
  • Getting your message right
  • Interactive candidate conversations
  • Influencing & persuasion during key ‘moments that matter’

Once the training concluded, AMS provided an additional 16 hours of ‘Ask the Expert’ troubleshooting and real-life problem-solving sessions to help Sourcers apply their skills successfully in their day-to-day operations and to ensure learning and knowledge transfer.

The impact

Following the completion of the training program and ‘Ask the Expert’ sessions, the Hilti team has enhanced their approach and strategic thinking in sourcing across all geographies. The content is now available for repurposing across the broader TA function, and additional sessions have been conducted to further develop the skills and knowledge of the wider team.

“The Sourcing training AMS conducted for us was hugely successful, getting consistently excellent feedback from the attendees and even the more experienced Sourcers felt they had learned a lot. AMS were great to collaborate with on the development of the bespoke material and really took time to understand our needs. The module on influencing and stakeholder management has a much wider application than just the Sourcers and has since been used as part of our wider transformation change management programme. Since the programme was delivered, we’ve seen a notable increase in our InMail response rates, and many regions have already held sessions to roll out the training to their wider teams.”
