I was genuinely honoured, and more than a little surprised, to be named on this year’s SIA Staffing 100 Europe list and then to also be recognised as Leader of the Year in the 2025 APSCo OutSource Awards for Excellence was truly flattering. But that recognition isn’t something I see as mine alone, it actually reflects the work, care, and dedication of my entire team that drive the Public Sector Resourcing (PSR) framework forwards every day.

Recognition is always a moment to pause and reflect on the journey, on the people who’ve supported you and on the kind of leader you want to be.

What leadership means to me is rooted in a belief we often express in the PSR team: “Talent is everywhere, but opportunity isn’t.” This principle guides how I lead, with a focus on enabling opportunity, building trust, and truly listening to those around me. Leadership, for me, is about creating the conditions for others to thrive. Whether it’s for my team, the people we’re supporting into public sector roles or the suppliers we are partnering with, I’m constantly asking: How can we make this more inclusive, more accessible, and more impactful? We’ve made significant progress embedding social value and inclusion into our operations, but I’m driven by the knowledge that there’s always more we can do and that leadership is about never settling for “good enough” when better is possible.

Throughout my career, leadership didn’t always look or sound like me, so I’ve never felt the need to fit a mould. I lead by being my true self: I check in with my team, I ask how they’re doing and I really listen to the answer, I make space for their ideas because I believe that people do their best work when they are heard, valued, and supported. Culture is built in the day-to-day. In the small moments. And if I’ve learned anything, it’s that leading with empathy, honesty, and humility goes a very long way.

It’s incredibly meaningful to receive recognition but what matters more is what we do next and for me, that’s keeping people at the heart of everything we do. The future of work is changing but the responsibility of leaders remains the same: lead with purpose, listen with intent, and lift others as we go.

“Leadership isn’t about having all the answers it’s about creating space for others to be heard, supported, and empowered to succeed.” – Melanie Barnett, Managing Director, PSR
